CECIMO joins ASTM Committee F42 on Additive Manufacturing Technologies
In the name of its Additive Manufacturing Working Group, CECIMO requested a membership in the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials). ASTM is globally recognised as an international standards organization that develops and publishes voluntary consensus technical standards for a wide range of materials, products, systems, and services, among which additive manufacturing holds an important position.
The CECIMO Additive Manufacturing Working Group has been welcomed within ASTM Committee F42 on Additive Manufacturing Technologies where CECIMO became an organizational member.
ASTM has its headquarters in the US (West Conshohocken, Pennsylvania), and offices in Washington, Brussels, Ottawa, Beijing and Mexico City. ASTM predates other standards organizations such as BSI (1901), DIN (1917), ANSI (1918) and AFNOR (1926) and is driven by the contributions of more than 30,000 of the world’s top technical experts and business professionals representing 150 countries. Working in an open and transparent process and using ASTM’s advanced electronic infrastructure, ASTM members deliver the test methods, specifications, guides and practices that support industries and governments worldwide.
Committee F42 (founded in 2009) and CECIMO AM WG share the same scope to promote knowledge, stimulation of research and implementation of technology through the development of standards for additive manufacturing technologies. Standards and related subcommittees under the jurisdiction of F42 include Test Methods, Design, Materials and Processes, Executive Terminology, Strategic Planning and the joint group with ISO/TC 261. In fact, underlining the emphasis on joint standards development, ISO/TC 261 and ASTM F42 reached several key agreements on the guiding principles to be followed and pursued by both organizations. These include one set of AM standards to be used all over the world, a common roadmap and organizational structure for AM standards, and a general agreement to work together in the same direction.
CECIMO’s participation to ASTM Committee F42 will represent a key support from the machine tool sector for a uniform development of additive manufacturing standards in the metal sector from both sides of the Atlantic.
