Research and Innovation

Research and innovation are fundamental to increase the competitiveness of Europe and contribute to the welfare of our society.

The European Union supports research as basis for our growth and invests in the European Manufacturing industry through a variety of funding opportunities. The machine tool and related manufacturing technologies sector is a knowledge-intensive industry, characterised by companies’ continuous investment in innovation, research and development. CECIMO supports the development of measures to promote private investments, cooperation along the whole value chain and the availability of R&D funds for the manufacturing sector at national and European level. CECIMO’s support to R&I initiatives is implemented through mapping and dissemination of funding opportunities for SMEs as well as raise awareness activities and the diffusion of potential exploitable results obtained by research centres, universities and organisations within our network.

Multi Annual Financial Framework and Horizon Europe

Most of the overall EU budget dedicated to research and innovation projects falls under the framework of Horizon Europe programme. The financial resources of this programme amount to €95.5 billion and will be distributed along the 2021-2027 Multi Annual Financial Framework. Adequate EU funding for the development of innovative and high-added-value solutions is crucial if we want to capitalise on European strengths and our research excellence, while ensuring that EU businesses can compete on a global level.

Horizon Europe implications are crucial for the development of the European innovation ecosystem. It creates jobs, fully engages the EU’s talent pool, boosts economic growth, promotes industrial competitiveness, and optimises investment impact within a strengthened European Research Area. The foreseen budget for Horizon Europe is more ambitious if compared to the previous Horizon 2020 (€77bn) and the share dedicated to the Pillar II (Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness) is about 56% of the entire budget, however, there is still room for improvement and further investments if Europe wants to keep the pace of other global leaders such as the US and China.
